Dili is a city where history feels heavy. For a place that’s been through so much, the mood on the streets is surprisingly joyful and welcoming.
My recent days have been a wild mix of contrasts. Wandering from the vibrant chaos of Taibesi Market to the peace found at the feet of Cristo Rei after a sunrise hike.

I actually got to witness the afternoon flag lowering at the Government Palace. Standing there, you can feel the pride of a young nation that has found its feet.
However, amidst all these landmarks, the most profound monument I discovered was the living, breathing creativity at Dili’s free arts school: Arte Moris. Honestly, I walked in and my jaw hit the floor.

The talent the students have is just next level. There is a hunger for learning that is humbling. Whether they’re mastering plastic arts or studying for their finals, their kindness was as present as their skill.

They welcomed me with open smiles, eager to share their country’s past, present, and future through their art. Arte Moris isn’t just a stop on the map. It is a lesson in how beauty can bloom anywhere.
By the way, did you know that Arte Moris is located in the old airport’s repurposed control tower? It’s actually the most badass use for an old aviation building I’ve ever seen!
